American Medicine Chest Challenge

Prescription drug abuse is a problem in our country. The 2007 National Study of Drug Use and Health found that 70% of people who abuse prescription pain relievers indicated they got them from friends or relatives, and the National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA) reports that upwards of 9 million people use prescription medication for non-medical uses.

Dropbox Location

The medication drop box is conveniently located in the lobby of Secaucus Police Department Headquarters - 1203 Paterson Plank Road

Flushing

Residents are NOT advised to flush unused medications down the drain, or simply discard them in the trash.  The American Medicine Chest Challenge provides the opportunity to discard unused prescription medications twenty four (24) hours a day every day throughout the year. The Secaucus Police Department will maintain custody of the deposited drugs and dispose of them properly. Please DO NOT put syringes in the Drop Box.

Accidental Poisoning & Ingestion

Drug abuse and drug diversion aren’t the only ways prescription medication falls into the wrong hands. As the number of adults using prescription medications has increased, so has the number of children being accidentally poisoned by medications. This is most commonly the result of medications not being properly stored or kept away from youngsters who are actively exploring their new environments.  In 2011, The Journal of Pediatrics found that 55 percent of child-related calls to poison centers from emergency departments were a result of a child getting into prescription medications.
